In the aftermath of Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham, Jurgen Klopp criticized referee Paul Tierney, saying: “I really don’t know what this man has against us.”
After scoring three goals in the first fifteen minutes, Liverpool appeared to be headed for an easy victory. However, they wasted their dominating lead before securing an incredible victory in stoppage time.
An emotional Klopp celebrated in front of the fourth official after Diogo Jota capitalized on Lucas Moura’s error to score the game-winning goal. As a result, the Reds manager injured his leg and was given a yellow card by Tierney.
In the lead-up to Tottenham’s equalizer, Klopp was incensed by Tierney’s decision to penalize Mohamed Salah for a foul, but Ryan Mason believed Jota ought to have been sent earlier for striking Oliver Skipp in the head with a high boot.
In reference to Tierney’s failure to dismiss Tottenham star Harry Kane during their 2021 meeting, Klopp claimed the official has “history” with Liverpool.
Naturally, the circumstances leading up to their third goal were very emotional, Klopp told Sky Sports. “How is it that Salah is being fouled up front? The linesman keeps his flag down and is standing right there.
“Tierney and I have a history. I have no idea why this man is against us; he continually claims there are no issues, but that can’t be the case. I don’t comprehend.
“I don’t know why he looks at me the way he does. I truly don’t have any issues with anyone, including him. When Harry Kane wasn’t sent off at Tottenham, he served as the referee.
Since these situations are so complex and challenging to comprehend, nobody in England is required to explain them.
“My celebration toward the fourth official was unnecessary, though I didn’t say anything terrible. I received punishment for that right away, pulling my hamstring or something similar, so well, that’s fair.
However, what he said to me after showing me the yellow card was unacceptable.
When questioned about what Tierney is reported to have told him, Klopp responded, “It’s not possible, I already said what I wanted to say.”
When informed of Mason’s opinion on Jota’s high challenge, Klopp responded, “Ryan has other things to worry about. Tottenham must play better football because they are such a talented team.
They are unable to simply counterattack. Despite having his foot up high, Diogo Jota is not aiming for the head.
I heard Skipp might have received a red card. Did he mention it as well? Wanting Diogo off the field so you can focus on other things.
The win, Liverpool’s fourth in as many Premier League contests, moves Klopp’s team ahead of Spurs and into fifth place, although they are still seven points behind Manchester United in fourth.
Klopp responded, “Of course not,” when asked if Liverpool could still finish in the top four. How can we get there if United and Newcastle win every game?
“We are close if they start losing them. We must win football matches up until that point in order to qualify for Europe at all.
