Dr. Peter Appiahene, who was appointed to the Electoral Commission (EC), is not a member of the New Patriotic Party, according to Alexander Awaksi Acquah, a member of parliament for Akim Odaa. (NPP).
Despite being on record as having applauded government initiatives like the free senior high school, he claimed that Dr. Appiahene is not a party person.
Speaking on Saturday, April 8’s Key Points on TV3, the MP stated, “He was complimenting the free SHS. You are not automatically a party member just because you voice your political viewpoint. When did supporting a certain government initiative make you a politician or government official?
He is not a party or official communicator that I am aware of. He is not a party person if he publicly supports a government policy.
His remarks come at a time when prominent NDC members are charging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with selecting NPP activists for sensitive posts like the EC.
Kofi Adams, the member of parliament for Buem, for instance, said on Ghana Tonight on TV3 on March 21 that Dr. Peter Appiahene, one of the recently appointed members of the EC, was a well-known NPP activist and a member of the party’s Bono Region media team.
“It is obvious that everything is wrong with the people the president has chosen. He stated, “The President has appointed well-known NPP activists.
“President Akufo-Addo has been selecting individuals who are well-known NPP campaigners; examples include Bossman Asare and Jean Mensa.
In the Bono Region, Dr. Peter Appiahene is a well-known NPP activist and a part of the NPP media team, the speaker said.
On Monday, March 20, Mr. Akufo-Addo swore in three new EC members.
Dr. Peter Appiahene, Madam Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Reverend Akua Ofori Boateng, the three new members, were sworn in during a brief ceremony at Jubilee House.
